Patient Tools
Interactive resources from Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke to help you understand your symptoms and make informed decisions about your dental care -- before you even call us.
Patient-First Philosophy
Informed Patients Heal Better
Dr. Richard Dawson believes that the best dental outcomes start with informed patients. When you understand what is normal after a procedure, you experience less anxiety -- and when you understand when something is not normal, you call us sooner. That is better for everyone.
The tools on this page are designed to help you make sense of dental symptoms at any time -- day or night, before or after a procedure. They are educational resources, not replacements for a clinical exam. If a tool recommends you call us, please do so. We keep time available for same-day concerns at our Glendale, Arizona practice.
Available Tools
Use these resources at any time -- and follow up with our team if you have concerns or if a tool recommends you seek care.
Answer 5 targeted questions about your symptoms -- how long you have had the pain, what kind of pain it is, whether there is swelling or fever, and what triggers it. The tool evaluates your responses against the most common dental conditions and gives you one of three clear recommendations: monitor at home, schedule within a few days, or call us immediately. It takes under two minutes and requires no login or personal information.
Start the assessment → Free • No account required Sedation SelectorNot sure whether nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation is right for your procedure? Answer 4 questions about your anxiety level, procedure type, health history, and recovery preferences. The Sedation Selector matches your profile to the most appropriate sedation level and explains what to expect -- helping you walk into your consultation with Dr. Dawson already prepared to ask the right questions.
Find your sedation option → Free • No account required Implant Candidacy QuizWondering whether dental implants are a realistic option for you? The Implant Candidacy Quiz walks through the key factors Dr. Dawson considers -- bone density indicators, health history, smoking, gum health, and timeline -- and gives you a suitability rating across five tiers from Excellent Candidate to Rebuild Required. It takes under three minutes and helps you arrive at your consultation already informed.
Take the quiz → Free • No account required Implant vs. Dentures Cost CalculatorCompare the true 5, 10, and 20-year cost of dental implants versus dentures, accounting for maintenance, replacements, and the procedures required for each path. Enter your specific situation and see a side-by-side projection that reflects your actual long-term investment -- not just the upfront price. Most patients are surprised by how the numbers shift over a 10 to 20 year window.
Run the comparison → Free • No account required Cracked Tooth IdentifierNot all tooth cracks are the same. Eight bite-test and symptom questions classify your fracture pattern across five types -- from surface craze lines to vertical root fractures -- and identify how urgently you need care. Pain that occurs when releasing the bite, not when pressing down, is the hallmark of cracked tooth syndrome and this tool flags it directly.
Identify your fracture type → Free • No account required Gum Disease Self-AssessmentNine questions covering bleeding, recession, mobility, bone loss on X-ray, and risk factors. Your answers are mapped against the five AAP 2018 periodontal stages -- from reversible gingivitis through Stage IV -- and the tool tells you how soon to be seen. Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss and is often painless until advanced.
Assess your gum health → Free • No account required Wisdom Tooth Decision ToolShould your wisdom teeth come out -- and if so, how soon? Eight questions covering current symptoms, eruption position, impaction angle, and risk to adjacent teeth route you to one of five decision paths: emergency, extraction soon, extraction routine, evaluation needed, or watch and wait. Not every wisdom tooth needs removal, and this tool helps you understand why.
Find your decision path → Free • No account required Hygiene Treatment PlanSelect your periodontal diagnosis and see a personalized care plan -- scaling and root planing, diode laser therapy, Arestin, chlorhexidine, OraCare, and nightguards -- with evidence levels and transparent pricing. Designed to help you understand exactly what your hygienist recommends and why, so you can arrive at your appointment already informed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these tools a substitute for a dental exam?
No. Patient tools are educational resources that help you understand your symptoms and decide whether to seek care. They cannot diagnose dental conditions, interpret X-rays, or account for your full dental history. If a tool recommends you call us, please do -- there is no substitute for a clinical evaluation when something does not feel right.
What if the tool says to call immediately?
Call (480) 530-3663. We keep same-day appointment time available for urgent concerns and do our best to see emergency patients the same day. If you are experiencing severe swelling, difficulty swallowing, or high fever outside of our hours, seek care at an urgent care or emergency facility -- dental infections can spread and should not wait.
Is my information saved?
No. All patient tools on this page run entirely in your browser. Your answers are not stored, transmitted, or linked to your dental records at Smile Science Dental Spa. No account is required and no personal information is collected when you use any of the tools.
How accurate is the Tooth Pain Assessment Tool?
The tool is designed to match common symptom patterns to the most likely category of concern -- monitor at home, schedule soon, or call immediately. It performs well for the most common presentations (thermal sensitivity, spontaneous throbbing, swelling, trauma). It is not designed to replace clinical diagnosis, and it cannot account for your specific dental history, existing restorations, or unusual presentations. If your symptoms feel serious and the tool says to monitor, trust your instincts and call us anyway -- the tool is a starting point, not the final word.
Can I use these tools for my child?
The Tooth Pain Assessment Tool is written for adults and adolescents who can accurately describe their own symptoms. For younger children, the tool is less reliable because children often have difficulty localizing or describing dental pain precisely. If your child is complaining of tooth pain, has visible swelling, or is running a fever, call our office directly -- we see pediatric patients and can advise you over the phone on whether same-day care is appropriate.
What if my symptoms change after I use the tool?
Use the tool again with your current symptoms. Dental conditions can change quickly -- a situation that was appropriate to monitor at home can escalate to a call-immediately scenario within hours if swelling spreads, fever develops, or pain intensity increases significantly. The tool result is only valid at the time you take it. If anything changes that concerns you, run the assessment again or call us directly. We would rather take a call that turns out to be nothing than have a patient delay seeking care for a spreading infection.
Are there more patient tools coming?
Yes. Our current library includes eight tools -- the Tooth Pain Assessment, Sedation Selector, Implant Candidacy Quiz, Implant vs. Dentures Cost Calculator, Cracked Tooth Identifier, Gum Disease Self-Assessment, Wisdom Tooth Decision Tool, and Hygiene Treatment Plan. Our goal is to make it easier for you to confidently understand your symptoms and options without having to guess. Check this page for new additions, or ask your care team at your next appointment what is available.
