What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances that add volume beneath the skin to smooth wrinkles, restore structural support, and enhance facial contours. The gold standard in modern filler treatment is hyaluronic acid (HA) -- a substance naturally present in skin and connective tissue that attracts and retains moisture.

As we age, the face loses fat, bone density, and collagen in predictable patterns -- resulting in hollowing under the eyes, deflation of the cheeks, deepening nasolabial folds, and loss of lip definition. HA fillers restore what time has depleted, strategically and reversibly.

At SmileScience we use only FDA-approved HA fillers from trusted brands such as Juvederm and Restylane. Because hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring and reversible with hyaluronidase, HA fillers are among the safest aesthetic injectables available.

Treatment Areas

Nasolabial Folds

The lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth deepen significantly with age. Filler here softens the transition and minimizes the appearance of heaviness in the lower face without affecting natural expression.

Lips

Lip filler restores or adds volume, defines the vermilion border, corrects asymmetry, and addresses the vertical lip lines that develop with age. Every lip treatment is tailored to look natural for your specific facial proportions and anatomy.

Cheeks

Cheek filler restores midface volume lost with age, creating a subtle lifting effect that simultaneously improves the lower eyelid appearance and reduces nasolabial fold depth. One of the highest-impact single filler treatments available.

Marionette Lines

Lines descending from the corners of the mouth toward the chin create a downturned, stern resting expression. Filler in this area softens the transition and restores a more neutral, relaxed appearance at rest.

Chin and Jawline

Non-surgical chin projection or jawline definition can meaningfully improve facial balance. This treatment is a natural complement to cosmetic dental work that addresses the lower facial third -- particularly implants, veneers, or smile design.

Under Eyes (Tear Troughs)

Hollowing under the eyes creates persistent dark circles regardless of sleep. Carefully placed filler in this delicate area can meaningfully reduce the appearance of fatigue. This zone requires particular anatomical expertise -- a strength of dental training.

Medical-Grade Filler vs. Cheap Alternatives

FDA-Approved HA Fillers at SmileScience

  • Juvederm and Restylane product lines
  • Clinically tested for safety and longevity
  • Reversible with hyaluronidase if needed
  • Administered by a licensed, trained provider
  • Vascular complication protocols in place
  • Authentic product from verified distributor

Risks of Discount or Unregulated Fillers

  • Non-HA fillers that cannot be reversed
  • Counterfeit or diluted product
  • Insufficient anatomy training in the injector
  • No reversal agent on-site in emergencies
  • Vascular occlusion or skin necrosis risk
  • Nodules, migration, or chronic inflammation

Filler complications are uncommon when performed by a properly trained provider using quality product. The cost of correction almost always exceeds the cost of doing it right the first time.

The Filler Experience at SmileScience

  1. 15--20 min

Every filler appointment begins with a thorough conversation about your concerns and goals. Dr. Turke assesses your facial anatomy and discusses realistic treatment options. We never recommend more product than your anatomy calls for.

    Consultation and Facial Assessment

  2. Medical History Review and Preparation

    10 min

We review your medical history, medications, and contraindications. Topical anesthetic is applied to treatment areas. Most HA fillers also contain lidocaine, making the injection itself quite comfortable.

  3. 20--40 min

Treatment takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on the number of areas. Fine-gauge needles or blunt-tip cannulas are used depending on the zone. You'll see immediate results -- final results settle over 2 to 4 weeks as swelling resolves.

    Injection

  4. Aftercare and 2-Week Follow-Up

    Same day + Week 2

You leave with written aftercare instructions. Most patients return to work the same day. A follow-up at 2 weeks lets us assess results and make any fine adjustments at no additional charge.

Results and Longevity

Filler longevity varies by product viscosity, treatment area, and individual metabolism. The following ranges reflect typical clinical outcomes:

Treatment AreaTypical DurationNotes
Lips6 to 9 monthsHigh-movement area; softer HA products used
Nasolabial folds9 to 12 monthsModerate-density product for this zone
Marionette lines9 to 12 monthsOften combined with cheek treatment
Cheeks12 to 18 monthsDenser product; lower-movement zone
Chin and jawline12 to 18 monthsStructural support product; very stable zone
Under eyes (tear trough)9 to 12 monthsThin, soft product used; delicate zone

Regular maintenance appointments keep results continuous. Many patients find that consistent treatment over 12 to 24 months requires progressively less product as collagen stimulation by the filler accumulates over time.

Cost of Dermal Fillers

Filler at SmileScience is priced per syringe. Most treatment areas require one to two syringes depending on the degree of volume loss and your specific anatomy. Treatment cost ranges from $500 to $900 per syringe depending on product and area.

Safety in a Dental Medical Setting

Dermal fillers are medical procedures. Complications -- while uncommon -- require trained clinical judgment to recognize and manage. Choosing a provider with deep anatomical expertise significantly reduces risk.

Dental training provides exceptionally thorough knowledge of the facial anatomy directly relevant to filler safety: the location of the facial artery, angular artery, infraorbital artery, and their branches are all structures dentists study in depth. Dr. Turke approaches every filler appointment with the same precision and anatomical awareness brought to dental surgery.

Combining Fillers with Neuromodulators

Fillers and neuromodulators address different aspects of facial aging and are highly complementary. Neuromodulators relax the muscles that cause expression lines (forehead, crow's feet, frown lines). Fillers restore lost volume and smooth lines that exist at rest. Used together in a single session, they address both dimensions of aging simultaneously.

A typical combination appointment treats the upper face with neuromodulators and the mid or lower face with filler. The total session runs 45 to 60 minutes. Results from the two treatments integrate over 2 to 4 weeks as both settle.

When planning a combination treatment, Dr. Turke accounts for how each element interacts -- for example, addressing forehead neuromodulator placement in a way that does not leave the brows heavy once cheek filler lifts the midface. This systems-level thinking is a distinguishing feature of dental aesthetic training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Discomfort is minimal. We apply topical numbing cream before injection, and most HA fillers contain lidocaine. Most patients describe a brief stinging sensation at the needle entry point. Lips are the most sensitive area; cheeks, jawline, and chin are very comfortable for most patients.

Minor bruising is possible and most common around the lips and under-eye area. It resolves within 3 to 7 days. Avoiding blood thinners -- aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E supplements -- for one week before treatment significantly reduces bruising risk. Plan treatments at least 10 days before any event where you want to look your best.

Not with our approach. We use conservative volumes, proportionally-guided placement, and a detailed pre-treatment conversation about what you want to achieve and what you want to avoid. If you bring photos of results you like and results you don't, we calibrate the treatment accordingly. Our philosophy is subtle enhancement -- you look like yourself, refreshed.

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase enzyme at any time. This is one reason we exclusively use HA-based fillers -- the treatment is reversible if needed. This is also a key safety advantage in the event of a vascular complication, where rapid reversal is essential.

Results are visible immediately after treatment. Final results are best assessed at 2 to 4 weeks after initial swelling has resolved completely and the filler has integrated with the surrounding tissue. This is why we schedule a 2-week follow-up for every patient.

Before: Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) for one week. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. Do not have treatment during an active skin infection. After: Avoid strenuous exercise, heat exposure (hot yoga, saunas), and alcohol for 24 hours. Do not massage or press on treated areas. Sleep elevated the first night if there is significant swelling.

HA filler is non-surgical, requires no general anesthesia, and has minimal downtime compared to fat grafting or a facelift. It is also fully reversible, which surgical options are not. The limitation is that filler does not address skin laxity directly -- patients with significant skin sagging may be better candidates for consultation with a plastic surgeon. We are transparent about what filler can and cannot achieve for your specific anatomy.
