Glendale, Arizona
Welcome to SmileScience Dental Spa in Glendale, AZ
Whether this is your first dental visit in years or you are looking for a new dental home, your first appointment at SmileScience is relaxed, thorough, and completely judgment-free.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
- Step 1
Arrive 10 minutes early. Our front desk team greets you, confirms your insurance, and walks you through new patient forms (or you can complete them in advance online). If you have dental anxiety, let us know now so we can set the right pace for your entire visit.
Warm welcome and check-in
Medical and dental history review
Step 2Your hygienist reviews your health history privately. This conversation guides anesthesia choices, X-ray selection, and treatment planning. Everything stays in the room. We ask about medications, allergies, current concerns, and how you feel about dental visits.
- Step 3
We take digital X-rays appropriate for a comprehensive new patient exam. Radiation is 90% lower than traditional film. Intraoral cameras let you see what your doctor sees in real time, on a monitor in your operatory, before any diagnosis is discussed.
Digital X-rays and intraoral photos
Comprehensive exam
Step 4Your doctor examines every tooth and existing restoration, charts gum pocket depths, screens for oral cancer, and evaluates your bite and jaw joints. You receive a complete picture of your oral health, not just a list of problems.
- Step 5
For most new patients, a professional cleaning follows the exam. If significant buildup is present, a deeper cleaning may be scheduled as a separate appointment after your hygienist reviews your X-rays and pocket depths with the doctor.
Cleaning (when appropriate)
Treatment discussion and written plan
Step 6If treatment is needed, your doctor walks you through the findings using your own X-rays and photos. You receive a written treatment plan with itemized fees before you leave. No pressure, no surprises, no work done without your informed consent.
Be Prepared
What to Bring to Your First Appointment
Photo ID
A valid driver's license, state ID, or passport. Required for identification and patient records.
Insurance Card
If you have dental insurance, bring your card so we can verify benefits before your appointment begins. We accept most major PPO plans. No insurance? No problem.
Medication List
A current list of all prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements. Include blood thinners, bisphosphonates, and any other medications with dental interaction considerations.
Previous X-Rays (Optional)
Recent X-rays from a prior dentist (within 12 to 18 months) can reduce duplicate films. Contact your previous practice for a copy or a signed release and we handle the rest.

New Patient Frequently Asked Questions
A comprehensive new patient exam including X-rays, cleaning, and doctor exam typically takes 75 to 90 minutes. If you are coming in for a specific concern or dental emergency and we defer the cleaning to a separate visit, plan on 45 to 60 minutes. We will give you a time estimate when you call to schedule.
Absolutely. Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people avoid the dentist, and we take it seriously. Dr. Dawson is board-certified in Oral Conscious Sedation and our team is trained to work at your pace. We offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation (with a board-certified anesthesiologist), and general anesthesia. Please mention anxiety when you call so we can plan your appointment accordingly.
Yes. SmileScience Dental Spa sees patients of all ages. We can schedule your whole family and, in many cases, coordinate same-day appointments to reduce trips to the office. Just mention that you are scheduling for multiple family members when you call.
We see this all the time and we are completely judgment-free. Whatever the reason you are here now, we focus on getting you healthy going forward. Many patients who have avoided the dentist for years tell us they wish they had come in sooner. We start with a thorough exam, walk you through findings without alarm, and build a realistic treatment plan together.
SmileScience Dental Spa is in-network with Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, BlueCross BlueShield, United Concordia, Humana, and many other PPO plans. We also accept most PPO plans as an out-of-network provider and file all claims on your behalf. Call us with your insurance ID and we will verify your coverage before you come in.
No insurance is not a problem. Our in-house SmileScience Membership Plan covers two exams, two cleanings, full X-rays, and 15% off all other treatments for one flat annual fee, with no deductibles, waiting periods, or annual maximums. We also offer CareCredit, Cherry Financing, and 0% interest payment plans on approved credit.
Yes, and we encourage it. Completing your medical and dental history, HIPAA acknowledgment, and insurance authorization online before your appointment allows your hygienist to review your information before you arrive. If you prefer to fill out forms in-office, arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time.
New patient exams at SmileScience use digital X-rays (90% less radiation than traditional film), intraoral cameras, Diagnodent laser cavity detection, and CBCT 3D cone-beam imaging when clinically indicated. You see everything on a monitor in your operatory before your doctor discusses any findings. No goop trays needed for impressions.
Yes. Nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are both available for routine cleanings and exams, not just surgical procedures. If dental anxiety makes routine care difficult, mention it when you schedule and we will set up the appropriate appointment type. IV sedation and general anesthesia are reserved for surgical and complex restorative cases.
For routine new patient appointments, we typically have availability within one to two weeks. If you have a dental emergency such as tooth pain, a broken tooth, or swelling, call us at (480) 530-3663 and we will do our best to see you the same day or next day.
