Dr. John Turke, DMD, Co-Founder, Smile Science Dental Spa
Your Restorative & Cosmetic Dentist

Dr. John Turke, DMD

Co-Founder, Restorative and Digital Dentistry Lead, Midwestern University DMD

Dr. Turke is the restorative and cosmetic lead at Smile Science. His work ranges from single-tooth porcelain and composite veneers to full smile makeovers and full mouth rehabilitation -- all designed, milled, and finished in-house.

His cosmetic workflow is built around precision from the first scan. Dr. Turke uses an iTero Lumina and Trios 5 intraoral scanner to capture highly accurate digital impressions, then designs every restoration in Exocad -- the same CAD platform used by professional dental laboratories. For patients with demanding esthetic goals, he uses DSLR photography with professional lighting to document shade, translucency, and texture before treatment begins.

Restorations are milled in-house using a PlanMeca PlanMill 60S milling unit or 3D printed on a SprintRay Pro2S. Ceramic restorations are fired in an Ivoclar CS6 Programat Oven. For esthetically demanding cases requiring exceptional shade matching or custom characterization, Dr. Turke partners with a local dental lab -- the decision is always made with the patient's specific outcome in mind, not convenience.

An Implant Pathway Fellow and certified Invisalign provider, Dr. Turke brings an exacting eye for proportion, shade, and smile line to every cosmetic case. His digital workflow means you can see a preview of your result before treatment begins.

Dr. Richard Dawson, DMD, Co-Founder, Smile Science Dental Spa
Your Cosmetic & Surgical Lead

Dr. Richard Dawson, DMD

Co-Founder, ICOI Implant Pathway Fellow, Sedation Dentistry Lead, Midwestern University DMD

Dr. Dawson co-founded Smile Science with a specific goal: build a practice where patients who have avoided dentistry for years -- sometimes decades -- can access care that would otherwise require a referral to a specialist. As the practice's surgical and sedation lead, he handles the cases most general practices refer out, including full-arch implant surgery and complex extractions, often for patients who need oral conscious sedation to get through an appointment comfortably.

He holds an Implant Pathway Fellowship with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) and is trained in photogrammetry-guided implant placement -- a technique that maps implant positions to sub-millimeter accuracy before surgery begins. His background in CAD/CAM digital restoration connects seamlessly to what Dr. Turke designs and mills in-house, so surgical and restorative phases of complex cases are coordinated from the start rather than handed off between offices.

Certified by the Academy of Laser Dentistry and a trained Invisalign provider, Dr. Dawson invests in over 150 continuing education hours annually. His approach to every cosmetic case starts with treatment planning -- designing the outcome digitally before any tooth is touched -- so there are no surprises at placement.

Patients who have put off care out of anxiety consistently describe him as calm, unhurried, and genuinely interested in understanding their concerns before recommending anything. That reputation is the foundation the practice is built on.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of your teeth, gums, and smile. Common procedures include porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, dental bonding, and smile makeovers. At Smile Science, every cosmetic treatment is designed using digital precision tools to ensure natural-looking, lasting results.
It depends on the procedures involved. A single-procedure makeover like whitening can be completed in one visit. Multi-procedure makeovers that include veneers or crowns typically take 3–6 weeks from consultation to final result. We'll give you a clear timeline at your consultation.
Porcelain veneers at Smile Science range from $1,200–$2,200 per tooth depending on complexity. Most patients investing in a full smile treat 6–10 front teeth. We provide an exact, itemized quote at your consultation, no surprises.
Yes. We work with CareCredit, Proceed Finance, Cherry, and Sunbit to offer flexible monthly payment plans. Many patients qualify for 0% interest options. Ask us about financing at your free cosmetic consultation.
Cosmetic dentistry costs vary widely depending on the procedure. Dental bonding starts around $300 to $600 per tooth, porcelain veneers range from $1,200 to $2,000 per tooth, and full smile makeovers may range from $5,000 to $25,000 or more depending on the scope. We provide transparent pricing and financing options at your consultation.
Most cosmetic procedures are considered elective and are not covered by insurance. However, some treatments that also restore function -- such as crowns or bonding used to repair a damaged tooth -- may be partially covered. We will verify your benefits and help maximize any coverage available.
Cosmetic bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin that is applied and sculpted directly on your tooth in a single visit -- no lab required. It is ideal for small chips, minor gaps, or discoloration and is the most affordable option. Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells custom-fabricated in a lab (or milled in-office), then permanently bonded to the front of the tooth. Veneers are more durable, more stain-resistant, and produce a more precise esthetic result, but require at least two visits and a modest amount of enamel preparation. We will help you choose the right option based on your goals, timeline, and budget.
Veneers are ultra-thin porcelain or ceramic shells -- typically 0.3 to 0.7 mm thick -- that are permanently bonded to the front surface of a tooth. At Smile Science, Dr. Turke designs veneers digitally in Exocad, the same CAD platform used by professional dental labs. Many cases can be milled in-office on our PlanMeca PlanMill 60S and glazed in our Ivoclar CS6 Oven, so you may leave the same day with permanent veneers. For the most demanding esthetic cases, we partner with a local ceramist for hand-layered custom shading. At your first visit we take digital impressions with an iTero Lumina or Trios 5 scanner -- no putty trays. You wear temporary veneers between appointments. Placement typically requires removing a very thin layer of enamel so the veneers sit flush and feel completely natural.
Veneers cover only the front surface of a tooth; crowns cap the entire tooth. If your tooth is structurally sound and the concern is purely esthetic -- color, shape, minor alignment -- a veneer is the right choice because it preserves more natural tooth structure. If a tooth has significant decay, a large existing filling, a crack, or has had a root canal, a crown is the better restoration because it provides full circumferential protection. Dr. Turke will review your X-rays and clinical exam at your consultation and recommend the option that achieves your esthetic goals while protecting the long-term health of the tooth.
Yes -- if you plan to whiten any teeth that will not be covered by veneers, whiten first. Porcelain does not respond to bleaching agents, so the shade of your veneers will be matched to your whitened teeth. If you whiten after placing veneers, your natural teeth will lighten but the veneers will stay the same shade, creating a mismatch. We recommend completing whitening at least two weeks before your veneer impressions so the shade has stabilized.
Not always, but sometimes alignment matters. Veneers can mask very minor crowding or spacing, but if your bite or tooth position is significantly off, placing veneers without first correcting alignment can lead to uneven stress, premature chipping, or a result that still looks "off." Dr. Turke will do a full esthetic analysis at your consultation. If Invisalign is recommended, it is typically 6–12 months and sets up your veneers for a longer-lasting, more beautiful result. Many patients who see the digital smile preview decide alignment treatment is worth it -- others choose veneers alone and are thrilled with the outcome.
Prepless veneers require little to no enamel removal before placement. They are a good option when there is enough natural tooth reduction that adding a thin layer of porcelain will not make the tooth look or feel bulky. Ideal candidates tend to have teeth that are slightly smaller than average, have significant spacing, or have worn edges that need building out. If your teeth are already the right size and position, even a 0.3 mm veneer may require minimal prep to keep the result looking natural. Dr. Turke will evaluate your tooth dimensions digitally and show you a wax-up or digital mockup so you can see exactly what is possible before any enamel is touched.
Yes -- that is one of the most compelling things about porcelain veneers. A single set of veneers can simultaneously close gaps, reshape chipped or uneven edges, and cover deep intrinsic staining that whitening cannot reach. This is why veneers are the cornerstone of most complete smile makeovers. Dr. Turke designs each case to address all of your concerns at once so that you walk away with a cohesive, natural-looking result in a predictable timeframe.
No. Smile Science is 100% owned by Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke, two practicing dentists. There are no outside investors, no private equity involvement, and no management company directing clinical decisions. Both owners practice here full time. In a DSO or corporate chain, treatment recommendations can be influenced by investor returns, production quotas, or rotating providers who do not know your history. At Smile Science, the people making your treatment decisions are the same people whose names are on the practice. They are the doctors you will see at your appointment.
