The Basics

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells of medical-grade ceramic bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They’re the most versatile cosmetic procedure in dentistry, capable of simultaneously changing the color, shape, size, and alignment of your smile in just a few visits.

Because they’re made from porcelain, they reflect light the same way natural enamel does. Nobody will know they’re not your real teeth, unless you tell them.

  • Chipped, cracked, or worn teeth
  • Stubborn discoloration that doesn’t respond to whitening
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Slightly misaligned or uneven teeth

How It Works

Your Veneer Journey: 3 Visits

  1. We photograph your teeth, take digital impressions, and run them through our CAD/CAM design software. You see a digital mockup of your new smile and we refine it together until it's exactly right. No treatment until you approve the design.

    Consultation + Digital Smile Design

  2. Tooth Prep + Temporaries Placed

    1–2 hours

A thin layer of enamel is gently removed to make room for the veneer. Temporary veneers are placed so you're never without a smile while your permanent ones are custom-fabricated in our on-site lab.

  3. Your permanent porcelain veneers arrive and we check fit, color, and bite before bonding. Once you approve the look in natural light, they're permanently bonded. You leave with your complete new smile.

The Precision Difference

Designed to 0.1mm. Your Veneers Are Custom-Built.

Most cosmetic dentists rely on physical impressions and analog lab communication, a process where small errors can compound. Dr. Dawson works entirely in digital from the start. His background in photogrammetry means your tooth geometry is captured with sub-millimeter accuracy before any design work begins.

That data feeds directly into CAD/CAM software, where each veneer is sculpted digitally to match your facial proportions, bite mechanics, and aesthetic goals. The result is a restoration that fits the first time and looks the way you envisioned, not a close approximation.

You see a digital preview before any tooth is touched. If you want changes, we make them in the software. Once you approve it, that design is milled directly into porcelain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Porcelain veneers typically last 15–20 years with proper care. They resist staining better than natural tooth enamel and maintain their appearance over time. Regular checkups and avoiding habits like nail-biting or chewing ice will maximize their lifespan.
Veneers are considered permanent because a small amount of enamel is removed from the tooth surface to accommodate the veneer. This means the tooth will always need to be covered. However, veneers themselves can be replaced if they chip or wear over time.
Porcelain veneers are highly stain-resistant, more so than natural enamel. However, the bonding resin at the edges can discolor over time, and composite veneers are more susceptible to staining than porcelain. Coffee and red wine in moderation are generally fine.
Veneers can address the appearance of mildly misaligned, uneven, or slightly crowded teeth by creating a uniform, straight-looking smile. For more significant misalignment, orthodontic treatment may be recommended first. We’ll evaluate your specific situation at your consultation.
Most cosmetic cases involve six to eight veneers across the upper front teeth -- the teeth visible when you smile. Some patients opt for ten to treat the full smile zone. Fewer than six can create visible mismatches in color and proportion between treated and untreated teeth, which is why we typically recommend treating the full smile line.
Modern porcelain veneers are translucent and mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural enamel. When designed with proper shape, color, and proportions, they are indistinguishable from natural teeth. The result depends heavily on the skill of the ceramist -- we use a high-end dental lab and perform digital smile design previews before any preparation begins.
Porcelain veneers at Smile Science are $1,399 per tooth. Most patients treat six to ten front teeth for a complete smile transformation, bringing the typical investment to $8,394 to $13,990. We provide an itemized quote at your free consultation so you know the exact total before committing to anything. Financing is available through CareCredit, Cherry, Proceed Finance, and Sunbit, with 0% interest options for qualified patients.
The prep appointment uses local anesthesia, so you feel nothing while the enamel is being shaped. Some patients experience mild temperature sensitivity for a few days after the temporaries are placed, which typically resolves once the permanent veneers are bonded. Most patients report the process is far more comfortable than they expected.
Most veneer cases are completed in two to three visits over two to three weeks. The first visit is a consultation with digital smile design. The second visit handles tooth preparation and temporary placement. The final visit bonds the permanent veneers. We can typically schedule your first appointment within one to two days of calling.
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells custom-fabricated in a dental lab, bonded permanently to the tooth surface. They last 15 to 20 years and are highly stain-resistant. Dental bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin applied directly to the tooth in a single visit. Bonding costs less and requires no prep, but typically lasts 5 to 7 years and stains more easily. Veneers are the better long-term investment for comprehensive smile transformations; bonding is well suited for minor chips, gaps, or single-tooth repairs.
Teeth grinding (bruxism) can shorten the lifespan of veneers, but it does not automatically disqualify you. We evaluate your bite and grinding patterns at your consultation. In many cases, a custom night guard worn while sleeping protects the veneers and significantly extends their longevity. We can discuss the best approach for your specific situation.
Porcelain veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure and are not covered by most dental insurance plans. However, if a veneer is being placed to restore a structurally damaged tooth (for example, a severely fractured tooth), a portion of the cost may be partially covered depending on your plan. We recommend checking with your insurance provider. For patients without coverage, we offer several financing options including 0% interest plans through CareCredit and Cherry.
No. Smile Science is 100% owned by Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke, two practicing dentists. There are no outside investors, no private equity involvement, and no management company directing clinical decisions. Both owners practice here full time. In a DSO or corporate chain, treatment recommendations can be influenced by investor returns, production quotas, or rotating providers who do not know your history. At Smile Science, the people making your treatment decisions are the same people whose names are on the practice. They are the doctors you will see at your appointment.
