Know What You’re Dealing With

What’s Causing Your Tooth Pain?

Not all toothaches are equal. Some warrant a call right now; others can wait a few days. Understanding the likely cause helps you know how fast to act, but when in doubt, call us. We can assess over the phone.

Call Immediately
Dental Abscess

A pus-filled infection at the root tip or in the gums. Signs include throbbing pain, facial swelling, fever, and a bad taste in your mouth. Abscesses can spread to the jaw, neck, or bloodstream if untreated. This is a dental emergency.

Urgent
Deep Cavity or Pulp Infection

When decay reaches the inner pulp of the tooth, bacteria infect the nerve tissue. This causes severe, constant pain, often worse at night. A root canal removes the infected tissue and ends the pain. Delaying treatment risks abscess formation.

See Soon
Cracked or Fractured Tooth

A crack can range from a hairline surface fracture to a split that extends into the root. Pain when biting is the hallmark sign. Cracks that reach the nerve require root canal treatment. Early evaluation prevents the crack from worsening.

See When Possible
Gum Disease or Sensitivity

Aching around multiple teeth, bleeding gums, or sensitivity to hot and cold may indicate gum disease or exposed root surfaces. These are not immediate emergencies, but should be evaluated soon to prevent progression and bone loss.

Getting the Facts

Do You Need a Root Canal?

Root canals have an undeserved reputation. Modern root canal therapy is comfortable, effective, and often the only way to save a badly infected tooth. Here’s how to recognize the signs and what to expect.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal
  • Severe, lingering pain after hot or cold
  • Spontaneous throbbing pain, especially at night
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness in the surrounding gum
  • A small pimple or bump on the gum near the tooth
  • Pain when biting or pressing on the tooth
Root Canal Myths vs. Reality
Myth
Root canals are extremely painful.
Fact
With proper anesthesia or IV sedation, most patients feel no more than they would during a filling. The infection is what hurts. The root canal ends that pain.
Myth
It’s better to just pull the tooth.
Fact
Keeping your natural tooth is almost always the better outcome. Root canal plus crown preserves full function and avoids the costs and complications of extraction and replacement.

For Severe Dental Anxiety

IV Sedation Available for Emergency Treatment

Dental anxiety is real, and it often keeps people in pain far longer than necessary. We have a board-certified dental anesthesiologist available to provide IV sedation for emergency procedures, so you can sleep through treatment entirely. Tell us when you call if this is a concern.

Pricing Transparency

What Does Toothache Treatment Cost?

The cost depends entirely on what is causing the pain. We cannot give you a number without an exam, but here are honest ballpark ranges so you are not going in blind.

Simple Filling
$150 to $250

For small to moderate cavities that have not yet reached the nerve. The most affordable outcome when caught early.

Reviewed at Consultation

We mill same-day zirconia crowns in-office. Pricing is provided at your appointment after exam and X-rays.

Root Canal + Crown
$1,800 – $2,500

Extraction
$99 – $149

Simple front tooth extractions start at $99. Surgical back tooth extractions are $149. Confirmed after your X-ray and exam.

Quick Answers

Toothache FAQ

Most toothaches should be evaluated the same day or within 24 hours. Pain from decay, infection, or a cracked tooth will not resolve on its own and tends to worsen. Swelling, fever, or throbbing pain that keeps you up at night are signs of active infection, and those situations warrant a call right now. We reserve same-day slots for patients in pain.
Yes. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) is generally more effective than acetaminophen for dental pain because it reduces inflammation as well as pain. Take the recommended dose with food. Do not take aspirin before an extraction since it increases bleeding. These are temporary measures only. They do not treat the underlying cause. Call us to get seen.
Yes. Pain that disappears suddenly can mean the nerve has died, which is not an improvement. The infection continues to spread inside the tooth even when you cannot feel it. An abscess can form without any pain. You still need to be evaluated. A tooth that stops hurting on its own has not healed itself.
It depends on the cause. A simple filling runs $150 to $250. Crown, root canal, and extraction pricing varies and is reviewed with you after exam and X-rays before any treatment begins. We accept most PPO insurance plans and offer 0% financing options for qualified patients. We give you exact numbers before we start. No surprises.
Yes. Oral conscious sedation and IV sedation (administered by a board-certified dental anesthesiologist) are both available for emergency procedures. If dental anxiety is part of what has kept you from getting care, please tell us when you call. We will arrange sedation so you can get treatment comfortably.
Call us immediately. A dental abscess is a bacterial infection that can spread to surrounding bone, your jaw, and in serious cases, your bloodstream. Signs include throbbing pain, facial swelling, fever, and a bad taste in your mouth. If you have swelling spreading to your jaw, neck, or difficulty swallowing or breathing, go to the emergency room and call us from there. We can see most abscess cases same-day and provide antibiotic treatment and drainage when indicated.
No. Smile Science is 100% owned by Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke, two practicing dentists. There are no outside investors, no private equity involvement, and no management company directing clinical decisions. Both owners practice here full time. In a DSO or corporate chain, treatment recommendations can be influenced by investor returns, production quotas, or rotating providers who do not know your history. At Smile Science, the people making your treatment decisions are the same people whose names are on the practice. They are the doctors you will see at your appointment.
Know the Difference

When to Go to the ER Instead of a Dentist

Most toothaches are dental emergencies, not medical ones. But some symptoms require an ER visit, not a dentist. These red flags need immediate medical care.

Swelling spreading to jaw, neck, or eye

This may indicate a spreading dental abscess. If untreated, these infections can become life-threatening.

Difficulty breathing or swallowing

Airway compromise from a dental infection is a medical emergency. Call 911 or go directly to the ER.

Fever above 101°F with tooth pain

High fever suggests systemic infection. See a medical provider or ER alongside dental care.

Inability to open your mouth

Trismus (lockjaw) in the context of tooth pain can indicate a serious deep space infection requiring hospital treatment.

If you are not experiencing these red flags, call us. We offer same-day emergency dental appointments and will see you as quickly as possible. (480) 530-3663.

While You Wait

Safe Ways to Manage Tooth Pain Until Your Appointment

These measures can reduce discomfort while you wait. They are temporary, not a substitute for care. If pain intensifies or new symptoms appear, call us immediately.

1
Ibuprofen (if you can take it)

400mg to 600mg every 6 to 8 hours with food is effective for dental pain. Do not exceed 3,200mg in 24 hours. Avoid if you have kidney issues, ulcers, or are on blood thinners. Do not take aspirin before extraction (increases bleeding).

2
Clove oil (eugenol)

Apply a small amount to a cotton ball and hold against the affected area for 15 to 20 seconds. Clove oil has natural anesthetic and antibacterial properties. Available at most pharmacies. Use sparingly, as it can irritate gum tissue if overused.

3
Cold pack (not heat)

Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth to the cheek for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Cold reduces swelling and numbs the area. Avoid heat. Warmth can increase blood flow to an already inflamed area and intensify pain.
