Wisdom Tooth Removal Cost by Type

The biggest driver of cost is impaction complexity. A tooth that has fully emerged through the gum is a simple extraction. One buried in bone requires a surgical approach. Here are typical ranges at our Glendale office.

Simple
Fully Erupted
$200–$400
per tooth

The tooth has fully broken through the gum. Standard extraction technique. Heals quickly with minimal discomfort.

Highest likelihood of full insurance coverage
Surgical
Bony Impacted
$350–$600+
per tooth

The tooth is fully or partially surrounded by jawbone. Requires bone removal. Higher complexity but still routinely performed in-office.

Coverage varies; sedation often adds value here
Optional
IV Sedation
$500–$900
for procedure

Complete comfort for all 4 teeth at once. Our licensed anesthesiologists administer IV sedation. You sleep through everything, wake up done.

Often partially or fully covered by dental insurance
These are typical ranges, not a final quote.

Your actual cost depends on your specific teeth, your insurance plan, and which sedation option you choose. We give you an exact number after your free evaluation and insurance verification, before any treatment is scheduled. You won’t encounter surprise bills here.

Understanding the Difference

Simple vs. Surgical Extraction: What Drives the Cost

Not all wisdom tooth removals are the same. A fully erupted wisdom tooth that comes out cleanly costs significantly less than an impacted tooth requiring bone removal.

Sedation also affects total cost.

Oral conscious sedation (OCS) is $350 added to your procedure cost. IV sedation for wisdom tooth removal is $1,500 for anesthesia, the most comfortable option, especially for removing all four at once.

What to Expect

Recovery Timeline After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Days 1–2
Peak Swelling

Swelling peaks, rest recommended, soft foods only, apply ice packs in 20-minute intervals.

Days 5–7
Resuming Normal Activity

Most patients return to normal daily activity. Full healing of the bone takes several months, but daily life is largely back to normal.

Using Your Insurance

What Insurance Typically Covers

Most dental insurance plans treat wisdom tooth extraction as an oral surgery benefit. Coverage levels vary, but most patients with insurance are surprised by how much is covered. We verify your specific benefits before your appointment.

50–80%
Typical coverage for impacted wisdom tooth extraction
100%
Some plans fully cover simple erupted extractions
Partial
IV sedation covered partially on many plans, varies by carrier

Coverage & Membership

Insurance, Membership, and Financing

Most PPO dental insurance plans cover 50–80% of wisdom tooth extraction costs when there is clinical necessity (impaction, infection risk, crowding). We verify your benefits before your appointment so you know what to expect.

No insurance? You still have options.

Our in-house membership plan covers your preventive care and reduces the cost of procedures. We also offer financing through CareCredit, Cherry, and Sunbit, so you can move forward without waiting to save the full amount out of pocket.

Private Practice. Personal Accountability.

Smile Science is an independent, doctor-owned practice -- not a DSO, not a franchise, not a corporate chain. Every treatment recommendation comes from the dentist who will perform your procedure, with no production quotas or outside investors in the room.

Your consultation and your procedure are with the same doctor.

Common Questions

Wisdom Tooth Cost FAQ

IV sedation is priced separately, typically $500–$900. It is often partially or fully covered by dental insurance. We verify your coverage before treatment so you know your exact out-of-pocket cost. Many patients find sedation is largely covered.
Most dental insurance plans cover 50–80% of wisdom tooth extraction costs, and some cover 100% for simple erupted extractions. IV sedation coverage varies by plan. We verify your benefits before your appointment so there are no surprises.
Yes. We offer 0% financing through CareCredit, Cherry, Sunbit, and Proceed Finance. Apply in minutes with same-day approval in most cases. Monthly payments as low as $0 down depending on your plan.
General dentists who perform extractions in-office typically charge less than oral surgery specialists. Our in-house capability keeps costs lower without compromising quality or safety. Complex impactions and IV sedation are both available at our office.
The main cost drivers are the degree of impaction (erupted, soft tissue, partial bone, full bone), the number of teeth being removed, the type of anesthesia selected (local, oral sedation, or IV), whether 3D cone beam imaging is needed for surgical planning, and the complexity of the case. A fully impacted tooth requiring bone removal costs more than a simple extraction of an erupted wisdom tooth.
Most dental insurance plans with surgical benefits cover a portion of wisdom tooth extractions, particularly when the teeth are impacted. Typical coverage is 50% to 80% of the allowed amount after your deductible. We verify your benefits before your appointment and provide a cost estimate so there are no surprises.
No. Smile Science is 100% owned by Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke, two practicing dentists. There are no outside investors, no private equity involvement, and no management company directing clinical decisions. Both owners practice here full time. In a DSO or corporate chain, treatment recommendations can be influenced by investor returns, production quotas, or rotating providers who do not know your history. At Smile Science, the people making your treatment decisions are the same people whose names are on the practice. They are the doctors you will see at your appointment.

What Affects Your Bill

Why Wisdom Tooth Removal Costs Vary

No two extractions are identical. These five variables determine most of the price difference between patients.

Type of Impaction

Fully erupted teeth cost less to remove than partially or fully impacted teeth. Full bony impaction, where the tooth is completely beneath the bone, requires the most time and expertise.

Number of Teeth

Removing all four at once is usually more cost-effective than separate visits. You also only need one sedation session, one recovery period, and one set of post-op appointments.

Anesthesia Choice

Local anesthesia is the baseline. Oral sedation and IV sedation cost more, but they make the procedure more comfortable, especially for complex impactions or anxious patients. Both are available here.

3D Imaging (CBCT)

Cone beam CT scans give us a precise 3D view of tooth position relative to nerves and sinuses. For complex cases, this imaging is not optional. It prevents nerve damage and guides safer removal.

Case Complexity

Root curvature, proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve, dense bone, and adjacent tooth position all affect how long removal takes. More complex cases require more time and surgical skill.

In-House vs. Referral

Some general dentists refer wisdom teeth cases out to oral surgery specialists who charge higher fees. Keeping complex extractions and IV sedation in-house, as we do, typically saves patients $500 to $1,500 on the same procedure.

Post-Op Needs

Prescription pain management, antibiotics when indicated, and a follow-up visit are standard. Some practices charge separately for each of these; we include standard post-op care in your total treatment quote so there are no surprises.

Insurance Benefit Limits

Most PPO plans have an annual maximum of $1,000 to $2,000 and cover 50 to 80% of extraction costs. If you have used benefits earlier in the year, your out-of-pocket for wisdom teeth will be higher. We verify your exact remaining benefits before your appointment.
