What’s Included in Your Cleaning Visit

Comprehensive Exam

Dr. Turke or Dr. Dawson performs a thorough clinical examination. They review your X-rays, check for cavities, evaluate gum health, and give you an honest assessment. No upselling, no pressure.

Digital X-Rays (When Due)

We use low-radiation digital imaging to detect problems that cannot be seen during a visual exam. X-rays are taken on a schedule appropriate to your cavity and gum disease risk, not automatically at every visit.

Ultrasonic + Hand Scaling, Polishing, Fluoride

We use both ultrasonic and hand instruments to remove calculus and plaque buildup above and below the gumline, followed by polishing to remove surface stains. Fluoride treatment is available as an optional add-on to strengthen enamel.

Oral Cancer Screening

Every patient, every visit. A quick visual check of the soft tissues, tongue, and throat for any changes that warrant attention. Early detection makes a significant difference in outcomes.

Why Patients Drive from Across the Valley

Your Cleaning Appointment Shouldn’t Feel Like a Chore

Smile Science is a dental spa. That is not a marketing phrase. It means we have built amenities into every appointment that most practices have never considered.

Heated massage chairs during every cleaning and polishing appointment.

Not a perk. Standard for every patient, every visit.

Weighted blankets: available for any patient who wants one, no questions asked.
Noise-cancelling headphones: tune out the sounds and tune into something you enjoy.
Ceiling-mounted TVs: watch your show while we work.
Oral conscious sedation ($350 add-on): for patients with dental anxiety, sedation is available even for a routine cleaning. You stay awake but deeply relaxed for the entire appointment.
No judgment: if it has been a few years, we have heard it before. We focus on what we can do now, not on what did not happen before.
Two doctors on staff: Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke are both available for complex diagnoses. If something needs a second opinion, you get it in the same building.

A Safe Space for Every Patient

It’s Been a Few Years. (We’ve Heard That Before.)

Whatever kept you away (cost, anxiety, a difficult past experience, life) you’re not alone, and you’re not going to get a lecture.

“Most of our patients who’ve been away for years are shocked at how manageable their appointment is.”
“We focus entirely on what we can do now, not on what didn’t happen before.”
“Our hygienist has a way of making every patient feel welcome, no matter their situation.”

Patient Autonomy Policy

Your Care, Your Choice.

We will always give you an honest diagnosis and a clear recommendation. What happens next is your decision -- not ours.

If we find that your gum health calls for a deeper level of care, we’ll explain exactly what we found, what we’re recommending, and what the risks are if you choose a different path. If you want to proceed with a regular cleaning instead, we document your decision, you sign an informed consent form, and you remain our patient -- no pressure, no repeated asks, no withheld care.

This is standard patient autonomy. We just think you deserve to know it’s explicitly part of how we practice -- and that almost no practice in the valley offers it this transparently.

How It Works
  1. 1
We measure and diagnose. Your hygienist takes a full periochart -- pocket depths, bone levels, gum health -- and records a clinical diagnosis in your chart.
  2. 2
We explain your options. If a deeper cleaning is recommended, we tell you exactly why, what it involves, and what the risks are if you choose otherwise. No ambiguity.
  3. 3
You decide. If you choose a standard cleaning, we document your informed decision and proceed. No guilt. No repeated pressure at every visit.
  4. 4
You stay our patient. Choosing a different path doesn’t end the relationship. You are welcome back, always, and we will always give you the same honest information.
Visit Frequency

How Often Should You Come In?

Every 6 months: the standard interval for healthy adults with low cavity risk and healthy gums. Two visits per year keeps calculus from building up to a level that damages bone and gum tissue.

Every 3 to 4 months: recommended if you have active gum disease or a history of periodontal treatment. More frequent visits allow us to monitor pocket depths and prevent the disease from progressing. This is called periodontal maintenance and is different from a standard prophylaxis cleaning.

More frequently during orthodontic treatment: braces and aligners create surfaces where plaque accumulates that are harder to clean at home. More frequent visits protect enamel and gum health during treatment.

Not sure where you fall? We assess it at your first visit and give you a clear recommendation based on your gum measurements, X-rays, and health history.

What Does a Cleaning Cost Without Insurance?

A standard cleaning and comprehensive exam at Smile Science runs $150 to $200 for patients without insurance. Our dental membership plan covers two cleanings and exams per year, plus X-rays, for a flat monthly fee, typically saving you $300 to $400 annually compared to paying out of pocket. New patients without insurance often qualify for a reduced-rate first visit. Ask us when you call.

What Our Patients Say

4.9 (400+ reviews)

Periodontal Health
Gum Disease Is More Common Than Most Patients Realize

Nearly half of adults have some form of periodontal disease -- and most have no symptoms until it has already progressed. Gum disease has been linked to serious systemic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory illness.

At Smile Science, every hygiene visit includes a full periodontal assessment. If we see signs of disease, we discuss it with you before you leave the chair. Learn about our periodontal treatment approach.

Independent & Doctor-Owned

Smile Science is owned entirely by Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke -- two practicing dentists with no outside investors, no DSO involvement, and no private equity. The doctors making your treatment decisions are the same people whose names are on the practice.

Your treatment plan is designed by your doctor -- not a sales coordinator with a revenue target.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

About 60 to 75 minutes for most patients, including the exam. If you haven’t been in for a few years, plan for a bit more time. We do not rush the cleaning to fit a quota. We want to do it right.
We accept most PPO dental insurance plans. Call us with your insurance information and we will verify your benefits before your appointment. If you do not have insurance, ask about our in-house membership plan, which covers your exam, X-rays, and two cleanings for $229 per year.
A regular prophylaxis cleaning is appropriate for patients with healthy gums. If clinical measurements show active gum disease, with pockets deeper than 4mm, we recommend scaling and root planing (deep cleaning). This extends below the gumline to clean root surfaces that a standard cleaning cannot reach. We assess this at your exam and discuss it with you before recommending any additional treatment.
A new patient visit includes a comprehensive clinical exam by the doctor, digital X-rays (full set if due), a professional cleaning, an oral cancer screening, and a full discussion of your findings. We allow more time for new patients so nothing is rushed. New patient cleaning and exam runs $150 to $250 depending on X-ray needs, and many PPO plans cover a significant portion of that cost.
Yes. Oral conscious sedation is available as an add-on for patients who experience anxiety during cleanings. You remain awake and can communicate, but you feel deeply relaxed and the appointment passes quickly. Let us know when you book and we will arrange it. The sedation add-on is $350 and is available for routine cleaning appointments.
No. Smile Science is 100% owned by Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke, two practicing dentists. There are no outside investors, no private equity involvement, and no management company directing clinical decisions. Both owners practice here full time. In a DSO or corporate chain, treatment recommendations can be influenced by investor returns, production quotas, or rotating providers who do not know your history. At Smile Science, the people making your treatment decisions are the same people whose names are on the practice. They are the doctors you will see at your appointment.
