Periodontal Health
Gum Disease Is More Common Than Most Patients Realize

Nearly half of adults have some form of periodontal disease -- and most have no symptoms until it has already progressed. Gum disease has been linked to serious systemic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory illness.

At Smile Science, every hygiene visit includes a full periodontal assessment. If we see signs of disease, we discuss it with you before you leave the chair. Learn about our periodontal treatment approach.

Independent & Doctor-Owned

Smile Science is owned entirely by Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke -- two practicing dentists with no outside investors, no DSO involvement, and no private equity. The doctors making your treatment decisions are the same people whose names are on the practice.

Every visit is with a doctor who has reviewed your complete care history before you sit down.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

New patient appointments typically last 60 to 90 minutes. This includes comprehensive X-rays, a clinical exam by the doctor, a review of your dental and medical history, a professional cleaning if appropriate, and a discussion of any findings or treatment recommendations. We reserve extra time for new patients so the appointment is thorough, not rushed.
Please bring a valid photo ID, your dental insurance card if applicable, a list of current medications, and any relevant dental records or X-rays from a previous provider. If you are a CareCredit holder and plan to use financing, bringing your card is helpful. Arriving 10 minutes early allows time for paperwork.
For most new patients, a full mouth series of X-rays is taken at the first appointment. These give the doctor a complete picture of your dental health including areas not visible during a clinical exam, such as bone levels, roots, and early interproximal cavities. If you have recent X-rays from a previous dentist, we may be able to use those instead.
The new patient exam itself is not painful. The clinical examination involves gentle probing of the gum tissue, visual inspection of each tooth, and an evaluation of your bite and jaw function. X-rays are completely painless. If we proceed with a cleaning at the same appointment, patients with sensitive gums may experience mild discomfort that resolves quickly.
If the doctor identifies decay, gum disease, or other concerns during your first exam, we will explain the findings clearly using X-rays and photos. You will receive a written treatment plan with associated costs before any restorative work begins. Emergency pain can be addressed the same day in most cases; routine restorative work is scheduled at a convenient follow-up appointment.
Yes, and we see this situation frequently. We will not lecture you about the gap in care -- our goal is to assess where things stand today and build a practical plan to restore and maintain your oral health going forward. We treat patients at every stage of dental health without judgment.
Your first visit includes a comprehensive exam with digital X-rays, a periodontal (gum) evaluation, and professional cleaning. We'll review your bite, check for cavities, assess existing restorations, and screen for oral cancer. The whole appointment typically takes 60-90 minutes.
Yes -- we work with most major PPO dental insurance plans. Our team handles pre-authorization and benefit verification before your visit so there are no surprises. We also offer Cherry financing and an in-house membership plan for patients without insurance.
Most dental needs -- including implants, Invisalign, extractions, and advanced restorations -- are handled entirely in-house. We have a board-certified dental anesthesiologist on staff for sedation cases. Referrals to outside specialists are rare.
Yes, we welcome patients of all ages. Our team is experienced with anxious patients of all ages, including children. We take a calm, unhurried approach and can use nitrous oxide for children who need extra comfort.
Bring a photo ID, your insurance card (if applicable), a list of any current medications, and any recent dental X-rays if you have them. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete new patient paperwork, or complete it online in advance.
We ask for 48 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Life happens -- just call us as early as possible so we can offer your slot to another patient. We'll always work to find you the next available appointment.
No. Smile Science is 100% owned by Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke, two practicing dentists. There are no outside investors, no private equity involvement, and no management company directing clinical decisions. Both owners practice here full time. In a DSO or corporate chain, treatment recommendations can be influenced by investor returns, production quotas, or rotating providers who do not know your history. At Smile Science, the people making your treatment decisions are the same people whose names are on the practice. They are the doctors you will see at your appointment.

New Patient Visit: Key Dental Terms

Definitions for procedures and clinical terms referenced on this page.

Comprehensive exam
A thorough initial clinical evaluation covering teeth, gums, bite, TMJ, existing restorations, and soft tissue cancer screening. More complete than a routine recall exam.
Periodontal charting
Recording pocket depths at six points around every tooth. Performed at every new patient visit to establish a baseline and detect early gum disease that is invisible on X-rays alone.
Prophylaxis
The technical term for a routine preventive cleaning. Removes plaque, tartar, and surface stains from all tooth surfaces. Usually completed at the same appointment when gum health permits.
Panoramic X-ray
A single X-ray capturing all teeth, both jaws, and surrounding bone. Allows evaluation of bone levels, impacted teeth, cysts, and overall jaw structure in one image without multiple exposures.
Treatment plan
A written, prioritized list of recommended procedures with fee estimates given to every new patient at the conclusion of their first visit. Treatment is categorized by urgency so you know what to address first.
Intraoral camera
A small wand-style camera used to capture and display clinical findings on a chairside monitor, allowing patients to see exactly what the dentist observes during the examination.
