Dr. Dawson is the co-founder of Smile Science Dental Spa and the practice's lead implant surgeon. Originally from Salt Lake City, he completed his DMD at Midwestern University and went on to earn a Fellowship with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), with over 4,000 implants placed to date.

He brings advanced training in full-arch surgery, CAD/CAM digital restoration, and sedation dentistry, and invests in over 150 CE hours annually to stay at the leading edge of the field. Do you see children?

Yes. We see patients of all ages including young children. We pride ourselves on creating a calm, welcoming environment that makes dental visits positive experiences for kids. Starting early with good dental habits makes a significant difference in long-term oral health.

Do you accept dental insurance?

We accept most major dental insurance plans and are happy to verify your benefits before your appointment. For patients without insurance, we offer our Smile Science Membership Plan at $229 per year, which covers exams, X-rays, and provides discounts on all treatment.

Can my whole family be seen in the same visit?

Yes. We can often schedule multiple family members back-to-back or simultaneously depending on availability. Call us and let us know you want to bring the family and we will do our best to coordinate appointments to minimize your time away from home.

How soon can I get an appointment?

We work hard to offer same-week appointments for new patients. For urgent or emergency situations, we typically offer same-day care. If you are in pain or have a dental concern that is bothering you, call us today rather than waiting.

How often should my family see the dentist?

Most patients benefit from two professional cleanings and exams per year. Children may need more frequent fluoride treatments, and patients with a history of gum disease or high cavity risk may be recommended to come every 3 to 4 months. We will tailor a recall schedule based on each family member's specific needs.

Can children and adults see the same dentist at Smile Science?

Yes. Smile Science is a family dental practice and welcomes patients of all ages. We see children from their first dental visit through adulthood. Having a single family dentist who knows your history and each family member's specific needs is an advantage we are proud to offer Glendale families.

Do you see young children, and what is a first visit like?

Yes, from age 3. First visits are intentionally short, gentle, and focused on making the experience positive rather than rushing through a full exam. We count teeth, do a quick check, and let the child get comfortable with the environment. A good first experience at 4 shapes dental habits for decades. We do not rush, and we do not force anything.

What if my child is nervous or afraid of the dentist?

We have significant experience with anxious young patients. We go at their pace, explain everything in age-appropriate terms, and give them control where we can. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available for children in appropriate cases. Let us know when you book and we will make sure the appointment is designed around their comfort level.

Can I combine a routine cleaning with a cosmetic consultation?

Absolutely. Many patients use their routine cleaning appointment to discuss whitening, Invisalign, or other cosmetic improvements they have been considering. Bring it up when you book or mention it when you arrive. We will make time to review your options and give you honest input on what would make the most difference for your goals.

Is Smile Science part of a dental chain or DSO?

No. Smile Science is 100% owned by Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke, two practicing dentists. There are no outside investors, no private equity involvement, and no management company directing clinical decisions. Both owners practice here full time. In a DSO or corporate chain, treatment recommendations can be influenced by investor returns, production quotas, or rotating providers who do not know your history. At Smile Science, the people making your treatment decisions are the same people whose names are on the practice. They are the doctors you will see at your appointment.

Prophylaxis

The technical term for a routine preventive cleaning. Removes plaque, tartar, and surface stains from all tooth surfaces. Recommended every six months for most patients.

Periodontal charting

Recording pocket depths at six points around every tooth to identify gum disease. Healthy readings are 1 to 3mm. Readings of 4mm or more indicate periodontitis at various stages of severity.

Scaling and root planing

A non-surgical deep-cleaning treatment for active gum disease. Removes bacterial deposits from root surfaces below the gumline under local anesthesia. The standard of care for Stage II and III periodontitis.

Bitewing X-rays

X-rays showing the crowns of upper and lower back teeth simultaneously. Used to detect decay between teeth and under existing restorations that are invisible to visual examination alone.

Composite filling

A tooth-colored resin restoration bonded directly to tooth structure. Mercury-free, aesthetic, and requires less removal of healthy enamel than older silver amalgam fillings.

Fluoride treatment

A topical application of fluoride varnish or gel that remineralizes enamel and reduces cavity risk. Applied at preventive cleanings and prescribed for high-risk patients of all ages.

Oral cancer screening

A visual and tactile examination of the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, and throat performed at every comprehensive dental exam. Takes approximately two minutes and requires no special instruments.
