Swelling and Bruising

  • Cold Compress: Use a cold compress or ice pack on the cheek near the surgical site. Apply for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.

  • Elevate Head: Keep your head elevated, even while sleeping, for the first couple of days.

  • Bruising: Some patients might experience slight bruising. This is normal and should subside within a week.

Oral Hygiene

  • Saltwater Rinse: Beginning the day after surgery, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) after meals to keep food particles away from the surgical site.

  • Brushing: Continue to brush your teeth as normal, avoiding the surgical area for the first couple of days.

  • Avoid Mouthwash: Do not use commercial mouthwashes containing alcohol, as they can irritate the surgical site.

Dietary Recommendations

  • Soft Diet: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days. Examples include mashed potatoes, pudding, yogurt, and soft pasta.

  • Avoid Hot Foods and Beverages: They can increase swelling and discomfort.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, but avoid using straws as the suction can disturb the surgical site.

  • Rest: Take it easy for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure.

  • Avoid Strenuous Activity: Refrain from heavy lifting and intense physical activity for at least a week.

Other Precautions

  • Avoid Smoking: Smoking can inhibit the healing process and increase the risk of complications.

  • Avoid Touching the Surgical Site: Do not poke or touch the area with your tongue or fingers.

  • Wearing Prosthetics: If you wear a denture or partial denture, our dentists will provide specific instructions.

Follow-up and Sutures

  • If sutures were placed that do not dissolve, a follow-up appointment would be needed for their removal. Please keep this appointment.
