Rest and Recovery

  • Activity: Limit your physical activity for the first 24-48 hours to allow your body to start healing.
  • Resting Position: Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling and bleeding.

Bleeding Management

  • Gauze Application: Bite down gently on the gauze pad for 30-60 minutes. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and continue to apply pressure.
  • Avoiding Exacerbation: Do not spit forcefully or use straws as the suction can disturb the graft site.

Swelling and Bruising

  • Cold Compress: Apply an ice pack to the cheek area over the graft in a 20-minutes on, 20-minutes off cycle.
  • Medication: Follow prescribed anti-inflammatory medications if provided.

Pain Management

  • Prescription Painkillers: Take as prescribed by Dr. Dawson or Dr. Turke.
  • Over-the-Counter Options: If you prefer, use medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, following the dosage instructions on the label or as recommended by your dentist. Generally, for most adult patients, we recommend dosing Ibuprofen every six hours, and then taking Tylenol as needed between Ibuprofen doses for breakthrough pain. The table below gives an example:
Time Ibuprofen Tylenol
1:00 PM 400 mg None
5:00 PM None 500 mg
7:00 PM 400 mg None
  • Take medications as directed. The above dosages are for healthy, normal-functioning adults. If you have renal, or liver impairment, do not follow these instructions. Also, these instructions are not suitable for children. Additionally, your physician may advise against one or more of these medications depending on your health conditions, it is your responsibility to inform your dentist of these limitations. If you have questions or concerns and you are patient of ours, contact us and discuss with Dr. Dawson or Dr. Turke.

Dietary Guidelines

  • Fluid Intake: Stay hydrated with plenty of fluids, avoiding hot beverages.
  • Soft Foods: For the first few days, eat soft foods like yogurt, soup, and applesauce.
  • Chewing: Avoid chewing on the side of the mouth where the graft was placed.
