Oral Conscious Sedation in Glendale, AZ
Oral conscious sedation is a prescription medication you take before your appointment. By the time you sit down in the chair, you are deeply relaxed -- awake enough to respond, but so calm that most patients remember very little of the procedure. It is one of the most effective options for moderate dental anxiety, and it requires no needles or IV lines to work.
What It Is
What Is Oral Conscious Sedation?
Oral conscious sedation (OCS) uses a prescription-strength medication -- most commonly triazolam, sold under the brand name Halcion -- taken by mouth approximately one hour before your dental appointment. Triazolam belongs to the benzodiazepine class of medications, the same family as Valium, and produces reliable sedation in dental settings without requiring an intravenous line.
Unlike nitrous oxide, which produces mild relaxation and wears off within minutes, oral sedation reaches a much deeper level of calm. Unlike IV sedation, it does not require a needle placed in your arm. The result is a middle-ground option that offers meaningful sedation -- deeply relaxed, minimally anxious, often amnesiac -- while remaining practical for most adult patients.
You will remain conscious throughout. You can respond to verbal questions and instructions if needed, and you breathe entirely on your own. But most patients report feeling profoundly calm, drowsy, and detached from the proceedings -- and the majority remember very little of the appointment afterward.

Where It Fits
How Oral Sedation Compares to Your Other Options
Oral conscious sedation sits between nitrous oxide and IV sedation -- deeper relaxation than gas, less intensive setup than an IV line.
| Feature | Nitrous Oxide | Oral Sedation | IV Sedation |
|---|---|---|---|
| How administered | Inhaled mask | Pill by mouth | IV catheter |
| Depth of relaxation | Mild | Moderate to deep | Deep |
| Memory of procedure | Full | Partial to none | Minimal to none |
| Driver required | No | Yes | Yes |
| Real-time adjustability | Yes | No | Yes |
| IV needle required | No | No | Yes |
The right choice depends on your anxiety level, medical history, and the procedure planned. We discuss all options at your consultation.
Is This Right for You?
Who Oral Conscious Sedation Works Best For
Oral sedation is a strong fit for patients whose anxiety goes beyond what nitrous can address but who prefer to avoid or cannot receive an IV line.
What an Oral Sedation Appointment Looks Like
- Step 1
Dr. Dawson prescribes triazolam (or an equivalent benzodiazepine) at your consultation after reviewing your medical history and current medications. You will also receive fasting instructions: nothing to eat or drink for approximately 4 to 6 hours before your appointment. Arrange for a driver before you leave -- you cannot drive after oral sedation, full stop.
Prescription and Pre-Appointment Instructions
Taking the Medication at Home
Step 2You take the prescribed dose approximately 60 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. The medication begins working within 30 to 60 minutes for most patients -- you will feel drowsy and increasingly calm. Have your driver present at your home before you take the pill, as you should not be left alone once the medication begins to take effect.
- Step 3
Your driver brings you to the office. By the time you arrive, most patients are already deeply relaxed and slightly drowsy. Vital signs are taken and Dr. Dawson confirms you are at a comfortable sedation level before proceeding. Additional nitrous oxide may be used alongside oral sedation in some cases to deepen the effect if needed.
Arrival at the Office
Treatment
Step 4Local anesthetic is administered to numb the treatment area -- oral sedation typically reduces the anxiety around this step significantly. Dr. Dawson then performs your procedure. You may be aware of sounds or gentle movements, but most patients feel completely detached and calm. The majority will have little to no memory of the appointment when the sedation clears.
- Step 5
You are monitored until it is safe to leave. Your driver takes you home, where you should rest for the remainder of the day. Oral sedation typically leaves patients drowsy for several hours after the appointment. Most patients feel fully alert by the following morning, though this varies. Do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours after taking oral sedation.
Recovery and Discharge
Preparation
Before Your Oral Sedation Appointment
A little preparation makes oral sedation significantly safer and more comfortable. Review this list in the days before your appointment.
- Arrange a driver -- not a ride-share, but someone who can help you inside and stay with you
- Fast for 4 to 6 hours before your appointment (water is generally permitted in small amounts -- follow your specific instructions)
- Tell Dr. Dawson about all medications you take, including supplements and over-the-counter drugs
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment
- Take the sedation pill at exactly the time instructed -- too early or too late can affect how well it works
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
- Do not wear contact lenses on the day of your appointment
- Do not make important decisions or sign legal documents on the day of your appointment
- Plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day after your procedure

Applications
Procedures Well-Suited to Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedation is appropriate for a wide range of dental procedures -- essentially any appointment where moderate or significant anxiety would otherwise be a barrier to care.
Multiple Fillings or Crowns
Appointments that involve several restorations in one visit are significantly more comfortable under oral sedation, both for the patient and the clinical team.
Root Canal Treatment
Root canals carry a disproportionate anxiety burden. Oral sedation makes the appointment tolerable and ensures the procedure is not the traumatic experience patients expect.
Tooth Extractions
Simple and many surgical extractions can be performed comfortably under oral sedation, particularly for patients who are not candidates for IV sedation or prefer to avoid it.
Deep Cleanings (Scaling and Root Planing)
Periodontal treatment requires time and can be uncomfortable for anxious or sensitive patients. Oral sedation makes completing full-mouth treatment in fewer visits realistic.
Cosmetic Work
Veneer preparation, extensive bonding, and smile makeover appointments that require several hours of precision work are more efficient when the patient is deeply relaxed throughout.
Routine Care for Anxious Patients
For patients who would otherwise skip or postpone cleanings, X-rays, and exams, oral sedation makes regular preventive care achievable.
Oral Sedation Pricing
Oral conscious sedation is an add-on to your procedure cost, not a standalone service. Pricing reflects the consultation, prescription, monitoring, and sedation management.
Oral Sedation Add-On
$150 -- $300
Added to the cost of your scheduled procedure. Includes consultation, prescription, and vital sign monitoring during treatment.
Insurance Coverage
Varies by plan
Some dental plans partially cover sedation when medically indicated. Our front desk verifies your benefits before your appointment.
A complete cost estimate including your procedure and sedation fees is provided at your consultation. Flexible financing through CareCredit and Lending Club is available.
What Our Patients Say

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Smile Science Dental Spa, and I couldn't be more impressed with the level of care and service provided by the entire team. Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke are both incredibly skilled and made me feel completely at ease throughout my procedures. Their professionalism, combined with their gentle approach, made me feel comfortable and well-informed every step of the way. I was especially impressed that I was able to get a same-day crown(apparently their first ever!), which exceeded my expectations. I couldn’t believe how quick and seamless the process was. It really saved me time and made the experience even more convenient. Cindiray and Angeles, the dental assistants, were equally wonderful. They were not only friendly and attentive but also thorough in explaining everything and made sure I was relaxed during each phase of my visit. Lastly, a big thank you to Litzy at the front desk, who greeted me with a smile and helped with scheduling and any questions I had. She made the entire check-in process a breeze. From start to finish, my experience at Smile Science Dental Spa was exceptional. I'll be returning for sure. I highly, highly, highly recommend them for anyone looking for high-quality dental care.

Honestly I’ve never been so happy to go to the dentist. I came in (late due to Lyft) and was still taken care of and treated with care. Even without insurance (kicking in within the next month) prices for an extraction on my infected tooth were more than reasonable. I was able to get more than expected done in the same visit. Dr. Dawson and his team made me feel so comfortable and taken care of. Won’t go anywhere else.

Myself and my family had previously gone to Dr. Turk at another dental office that he worked at. He had relocated and we did not know where he had gone to until this week. Today I got in with Dr. Turk and he took the time to look at my x-rays carefully . I was having pain from a tooth and some other issues. The previous Dentist I went to that I saw just a few days earlier, he did not find any issues with my tooth which I had pain in. Dr. Turk identified infection and referred me to an endodontist. He is very gentle as a wonderful disposition and my self and my family are thrilled to be able to get back with him. The office is lovely, relaxing music, heat and massage chair.I have always been very nervous and some anxiety going to dentist as I have had bad reactions with the anesthesia. I am confident that Dr. Kirk will help me get through my next appointment just fine. “The staff are very kind and attentive. I am looking forward as I have quite a bit of work to be done, and I know I’m in good hands with Dr. Turk and his staff. Five stars!⭐️ Sherry

I recently moved to Arizona and had an issue with a tooth repair from 15 years back. Not knowing anyone here in my new home, I searched dentists close to me. I chose Smile Science much like pinning the tail on the donkey and my selection couldn't have been better! What a terrific staff! Dr. Turke was concerned the tooth would need to be extracted, but said he wanted to take a shot at saving it..and that's just what he did! After setting a temporary crown, I was on my way with an appointment to install the permanent crown in the following two weeks. That evening I received a call I've never received from a dentist. Dr. Turke had taken the time to follow up with me to make sure I wasn't in any discomfort..I was completely caught off guard by this kind of attention to detail and caring for my well being. The permanent crown is now in place, it fits and feels fantastic, the job and treatment are first class! Thank you, Dr. Turke and staff for taking in this stray and giving me a home dentist! I'd like to say that I'm just good at selecting blindly, but the truth is I am very lucky..and I'll take lucky over being good any day of the week! Thank you, again and Happiest of New Year's in 2026, Science Smile!!

Oral Conscious Sedation FAQs
No. Oral conscious sedation keeps you awake and able to respond to verbal instructions -- hence the word "conscious" in the name. But you will feel deeply relaxed, possibly drowsy, and largely detached from the proceedings. Most patients describe it as feeling like they were almost asleep but aware something was happening. The majority remember very little afterward, which for many patients is the most important part.
The most commonly prescribed medication is triazolam, sold under the brand name Halcion. It is a short-acting benzodiazepine -- the same medication class as Valium -- that has been used safely in dental sedation for decades. Other benzodiazepines may be prescribed depending on a patient's medical history. Dr. Dawson will review your full health history and current medications before prescribing to ensure the right choice for you.
Oral sedation effects typically persist for several hours after you take the pill. Most patients feel drowsy and mildly impaired for 4 to 6 hours total, with some residual grogginess possible into the evening. Full mental clarity generally returns by the following morning. This is one key difference from nitrous oxide, which clears in minutes, and it is why a driver and a restful afternoon at home are non-negotiable requirements for oral sedation appointments.
Possibly -- but a thorough medication review is required first. Benzodiazepines can interact with other sedatives, certain antidepressants, antifungal medications, and other drugs in ways that require dose adjustment or contraindicate use. Dr. Dawson reviews your complete medication list before prescribing. Some patients may not be suitable candidates for oral sedation and may be better served by nitrous oxide or another approach.
Unlike IV sedation, oral sedation cannot be adjusted in real time once you have taken it. The dose is fixed by what you swallowed. This is the primary limitation compared to IV sedation. If it turns out you need deeper sedation partway through an appointment, the best option at that point is to pause and reschedule under IV sedation. This is why accurate consultation -- where we honestly assess your anxiety level and the planned procedure -- is so important before your oral sedation appointment.
Yes, for medically appropriate patients with proper screening. Oral conscious sedation has a long, well-established safety record in dental practice. Dr. Dawson holds OCS certification in Arizona, which authorizes and trains him specifically for oral sedation in the dental setting. Vital signs are monitored during your appointment, and reversal medications are available. Patients with certain medical conditions may not be suitable candidates, which is determined at your consultation.
If oral sedation does not provide sufficient relief, the next step is IV sedation. At SmileScience, IV sedation is administered by a board-certified dental anesthesiologist, offering a deeper and more precisely controlled level of sedation. We can discuss whether IV sedation is appropriate for your situation at a follow-up consultation. There is no failure in needing a stronger option -- it simply means we need to match the sedation level more precisely to your actual anxiety level.
Do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before your scheduled arrival time -- your specific fasting instructions will be provided when your prescription is called in. Arrange a trusted adult driver to bring you to the office and take you home, and plan for a quiet afternoon with no driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Take the prescribed medication at the exact time instructed, and call us immediately if you have any concerns before leaving home.
