Frequently Asked Questions

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic dental solution that can enhance the appearance of your natural teeth. Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells that can mask imperfections such as discoloration, chips, gaps, and minor misalignments. Ideally, they are relatively uniform in thickness, and a minimal amount of natural tooth is removed to allow only a thin porcelain shell to replace your tooth enamel.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers are a durable and long-lasting cosmetic solution, with a typical lifespan of 20+ years. In many cases, theycan last even longer with excellent care. The precise lifespan of your veneers depends on many factors, such as how well you take care of them, your oral hygiene, dietary factors, and other lifestyle habits. To ensure that your veneers have a long lifespan, it's very important that you maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly, avoid chewing on hard objects such as ice or pens, and schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings.

How do I care for my veneers?

Caring for porcelain veneers is relatively straightforward. In many ways, it is no different than caring for your natural teeth. There are some additional precautions however, which are even more important to follow if you have veneers.

  1. Avoid chewing hard objects such as ice, pens, or fingernails.
  2. Wear a nightguard, and if applicable, a mouthguard when playing sports.
  3. Avoid abrasive toothpastes which can damage the porcelain glazing on the surface of your veneers.
  4. Maintain good oral hygiene. Be sure to brush and floss your veneers as though they were natural teeth.

Can porcelain veneers fix crooked teeth?

Porcelain veneers can improve the appearance of mildly crooked teeth by creating the illusion of a straighter smile. However, veneers are not a solution for severely misaligned teeth or bite issues. In cases of significant misalignment, orthodontics are recommended before placement of porcelain veneers.

Can I still whiten my teeth?

If you have plans to whiten your teeth, then that should be done before any other cosmetic dental work. Ideally, we will match your custom veneers to your other teeth. Veneers themselves cannot be whitened as they are made of porcelain which is a relatively inert material.

How long does the procedure take?

To do an exceptional job, expect several appointments over over several weeks. Here is a general timeline:

  1. Your first appointment will be a consultation. We gather as much diagnostic information as possible, evaluate your oral health, and discuss your goals and concerns.
  2. We create a model to represent how your final veneers will look. This allows you to see the final result before we do anything to your teeth.
  3. Once you are happy with the plan, we prepare the teeth. Using advanced techniques we can remove as little of your tooth as possible.
  4. We place temporary veneers so you can give them a test drive for a week or two before we commit to the final porcelain veneers.
  5. When you are happy with the temporary veneers, we will then take an impression and send them off to the laboratory to create your final porcelain veneers.
  6. Finally, we deliver your porcelain veneers.
  7. Two weeks later, we will have a follow-up visit to make any final adjustments, and to take some great photos of your beautiful new smile!
