Dental Emergencies We Treat
Every situation below warrants a same-day call. If you're not sure whether yours qualifies, call -- we triage over the phone in under two minutes.
Same-Day Treatment
Emergency Dental Procedures
We Perform In-Office
Most emergencies are resolved completely in a single visit. Below are the procedures we perform most frequently for emergency patients -- every one available same-day.
Emergency Root Canal
Severe toothache, swelling, or pain that worsens at night is often a sign of pulp infection. We perform same-day root canal therapy for front and molar teeth to eliminate infection and relieve pain in a single visit. Modern techniques and sedation make root canals far more comfortable than their reputation suggests.
Common causes: deep decay, cracked tooth, traumatic injury, failed filling
Same-Day Crowns
Broken or cracked teeth often require a crown immediately to prevent further fracture. Using in-office CAD/CAM milling technology, Dr. Turke can design, mill, and seat a permanent porcelain or zirconia crown in a single appointment -- no temporaries, no two-week lab wait. Same-day crowns are a same-day emergency solution.
Common causes: broken tooth, failed old crown, large cavity, post root canal
Same-Day Implant Placement
When a tooth cannot be saved and must be extracted, implant placement at the same appointment (immediate placement) is often possible. This approach preserves the existing bone socket, reduces total treatment time, and avoids a second surgical appointment. Dr. Dawson evaluates bone quality chairside to determine same-day implant eligibility.
Eligible when: sufficient bone present, no active uncontrolled infection, front or premolar tooth
Tooth Extractions
When a tooth is too damaged, infected, or broken to save, extraction is the fastest path to pain relief. Dr. Dawson performs both simple and surgical extractions same-day, including wisdom teeth and broken-root cases. Sedation is available for anxious patients. Replacement options (implant, bridge) are discussed at the same appointment.
Sedation available: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation for anxious patients
Abscess Drainage (Urgent)
Dental abscesses do not resolve on their own and can spread rapidly to the jaw, neck, and airway. We drain abscesses same-day, prescribe appropriate antibiotics, and treat the underlying tooth. Facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing alongside dental pain requires immediate care -- call us before coming in so we can prepare.
If swelling reaches your eye, jaw, or neck -- call 911 immediately.
Chipped & Broken Tooth Repair
Chipped or broken teeth with sharp edges are painful, lacerate soft tissue, and often worsen if left unaddressed. Dental bonding repairs chips and minor breaks in a single visit using tooth-colored composite resin -- no lab, no waiting. For larger breaks or root involvement, a same-day crown may be the better option. We assess and recommend the right solution on arrival.
Completed in: 30 to 60 minutes per tooth
First Aid While You Travel In
What to Do Right Now
Tap your situation below. These steps reduce pain, protect the tooth, and improve your outcome on the way in.
Knocked-Out Tooth 30-Min Window
- Hold by the crown (white top) -- never touch the root surface
- Rinse gently with milk or sterile saline if dirty -- do NOT scrub
- Storage priority: back in socket > Save-A-Tooth kit > whole milk > cheek -- NEVER dry or plain water
- Come in immediately -- success is highest within 30 minutes and drops sharply after 60
Dental Abscess or Facial Swelling Call First
- Apply a cold compress to the cheek in 10-minute on/off intervals
- Do NOT attempt to pop or drain the abscess yourself
- Do not apply heat -- it accelerates infection spread
- If swelling reaches your eye, jaw, or neck -- call 911 immediately
Severe Toothache Same-Day
- Rinse the mouth with warm salt water to clear debris around the tooth
- Take OTC ibuprofen (if not contraindicated) to reduce inflammation and pain
- Do NOT place aspirin directly on the gum -- it causes a chemical burn
- Avoid very hot or cold foods on the affected side
Cracked or Chipped Tooth Same-Day
- Rinse with warm water to clear any fragments
- Apply gauze with gentle pressure if there is bleeding from the gum
- Avoid biting on that side -- especially hard or crunchy foods
- If there is a large visible break or a sharp edge cutting the cheek, come in the same day
Bleeding / Soft Tissue Injury Same-Day
- Apply firm, steady pressure with clean gauze for at least 10 minutes without lifting to check
- Lifting the gauze before 10 minutes dislodges the clot and restarts bleeding
- If bleeding does not slow after 15 minutes of pressure, come in or go to urgent care
Lost Crown or Filling Same-Day
- Locate the crown if possible and bring it with you to the appointment
- Apply a small amount of OTC dental cement inside the crown to seat it temporarily
- Do not use super glue -- it makes re-cementation significantly harder
- Avoid chewing on that side until repaired
Post-Extraction Pain or Dry Socket Same-Day
- Worsening pain 2-4 days after an extraction may be dry socket -- a common and treatable complication
- Do not smoke, use straws, or rinse vigorously -- these dislodge the clot
- Gently rinse with warm salt water and take ibuprofen for pain
- Call us -- we can place a medicated dressing that provides fast relief, usually same day

Frequently Asked Questions
Any situation involving significant pain, trauma, swelling, or a tooth that has been knocked out or broken is an emergency. A useful rule: if it is causing you enough distress to wonder whether you should call, call. We would rather have a quick conversation and reassure you than have you wait on something that needs treatment. Common emergencies include severe toothaches, knocked-out or cracked teeth, lost crowns, dental abscesses, and soft tissue injuries.
For true emergencies, we aim to see you the same day. Call us as early in the morning as possible -- (480) 530-3663 -- and we will work to fit you into an emergency slot. In most cases we can get you in within a few hours. Calling first rather than just walking in gives us time to prepare the right treatment room and materials for your specific situation.
Yes. We welcome new patients for emergency visits. Call us and we will collect basic information over the phone while we prepare your appointment. You do not need a referral or any prior relationship with our practice.
Not always -- mild sensitivity to hot or cold that fades quickly can often wait for a scheduled appointment. However, any pain that is severe, persistent, worsening, or accompanied by swelling, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth is likely an emergency. Dental infections in particular can escalate quickly, so it is always safer to call and let us evaluate rather than wait.
Cost should never prevent you from getting necessary care. We accept most dental insurance plans and will verify your benefits before treatment so there are no surprises. For uninsured patients, we offer flexible financing options including low-interest payment plans. We also have a dental membership plan that covers exams and X-rays for a flat annual fee. Talk to our front desk -- we will find an option that works.
Call (480) 530-3663. Our after-hours message will provide guidance. For true life-threatening emergencies -- uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, or severe jaw trauma -- call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For non-life-threatening emergencies, leave a message and we will call you back at the start of business to schedule a same-day appointment.
Yes, if you act fast. The periodontal ligament cells on the root surface need to stay alive for reimplantation to work. Keep the tooth moist, handle it by the crown only, and get to us within 30 to 60 minutes. Success rates are highest when reimplantation happens in under 30 minutes.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Smile Science Dental Spa, and I couldn't be more impressed with the level of care and service provided by the entire team. Dr. Dawson and Dr. Turke are both incredibly skilled and made me feel completely at ease throughout my procedures. Their professionalism, combined with their gentle approach, made me feel comfortable and well-informed every step of the way. I was especially impressed that I was able to get a same-day crown(apparently their first ever!), which exceeded my expectations. I couldn’t believe how quick and seamless the process was. It really saved me time and made the experience even more convenient. Cindiray and Angeles, the dental assistants, were equally wonderful. They were not only friendly and attentive but also thorough in explaining everything and made sure I was relaxed during each phase of my visit. Lastly, a big thank you to Litzy at the front desk, who greeted me with a smile and helped with scheduling and any questions I had. She made the entire check-in process a breeze. From start to finish, my experience at Smile Science Dental Spa was exceptional. I'll be returning for sure. I highly, highly, highly recommend them for anyone looking for high-quality dental care.

Honestly I’ve never been so happy to go to the dentist. I came in (late due to Lyft) and was still taken care of and treated with care. Even without insurance (kicking in within the next month) prices for an extraction on my infected tooth were more than reasonable. I was able to get more than expected done in the same visit. Dr. Dawson and his team made me feel so comfortable and taken care of. Won’t go anywhere else.

Myself and my family had previously gone to Dr. Turk at another dental office that he worked at. He had relocated and we did not know where he had gone to until this week. Today I got in with Dr. Turk and he took the time to look at my x-rays carefully . I was having pain from a tooth and some other issues. The previous Dentist I went to that I saw just a few days earlier, he did not find any issues with my tooth which I had pain in. Dr. Turk identified infection and referred me to an endodontist. He is very gentle as a wonderful disposition and my self and my family are thrilled to be able to get back with him. The office is lovely, relaxing music, heat and massage chair.I have always been very nervous and some anxiety going to dentist as I have had bad reactions with the anesthesia. I am confident that Dr. Kirk will help me get through my next appointment just fine. “The staff are very kind and attentive. I am looking forward as I have quite a bit of work to be done, and I know I’m in good hands with Dr. Turk and his staff. Five stars!⭐️ Sherry

I recently moved to Arizona and had an issue with a tooth repair from 15 years back. Not knowing anyone here in my new home, I searched dentists close to me. I chose Smile Science much like pinning the tail on the donkey and my selection couldn't have been better! What a terrific staff! Dr. Turke was concerned the tooth would need to be extracted, but said he wanted to take a shot at saving it..and that's just what he did! After setting a temporary crown, I was on my way with an appointment to install the permanent crown in the following two weeks. That evening I received a call I've never received from a dentist. Dr. Turke had taken the time to follow up with me to make sure I wasn't in any discomfort..I was completely caught off guard by this kind of attention to detail and caring for my well being. The permanent crown is now in place, it fits and feels fantastic, the job and treatment are first class! Thank you, Dr. Turke and staff for taking in this stray and giving me a home dentist! I'd like to say that I'm just good at selecting blindly, but the truth is I am very lucky..and I'll take lucky over being good any day of the week! Thank you, again and Happiest of New Year's in 2026, Science Smile!!
