Dental Emergencies We Treat

Every situation below warrants a same-day call. If you're not sure whether yours qualifies, call -- we triage over the phone in under two minutes.

Most Time-Critical

Knocked-Out Tooth

A completely displaced tooth. Reimplantation success is highest within 30 minutes -- store the tooth in milk or between your cheek and gum, and call us immediately.

Call First -- Can Spread Fast

Dental Abscess / Infection

A pocket of infection presenting as swelling, a bump on the gum, or facial pressure. Cold compress only -- do not apply heat or attempt to pop it. If swelling spreads toward your eye, jaw, or neck: call 911.

Same-Day

Toothache / Severe Tooth Pain

Persistent or worsening pain -- especially at night -- signals decay, infection, or nerve exposure. Rinse with warm salt water, take ibuprofen if not contraindicated. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum.

Same-Day

Cracked or Broken Tooth

Fractures range from hairline cracks to large visible breaks. Rinse with warm water, apply gauze if bleeding, and avoid biting on that side. Sharp fragments lacerate soft tissue quickly.

Lost Crown or Filling

Exposed tooth structure is sensitive and fractures easily. Use OTC dental cement to temporarily reseat the crown and avoid chewing on that side. Bring the crown -- we may re-cement it same day.

Same-Day

Soft Tissue Injury

Cuts or lacerations to the lip, cheek, tongue, or gum. Apply firm pressure with clean gauze for 10 minutes without lifting to check. Oral tissue bleeds heavily -- if it does not slow after 15 minutes, come in.

Same-Day

Broken or Poking Braces Wire

A poking wire can be temporarily pushed flat with a pencil eraser, or covered with orthodontic wax. Do not cut wires with nail clippers. Come in to have it properly adjusted.

Same-Day

Object Stuck Between Teeth

Use dental floss gently -- never sharp instruments. If it does not release with floss, stop and call us. Forceful attempts damage root surfaces and gum tissue.

Emergency Dental Procedures
We Perform In-Office

Most emergencies are resolved completely in a single visit. Below are the procedures we perform most frequently for emergency patients -- every one available same-day.

Emergency Root Canal

Severe toothache, swelling, or pain that worsens at night is often a sign of pulp infection. We perform same-day root canal therapy for front and molar teeth to eliminate infection and relieve pain in a single visit. Modern techniques and sedation make root canals far more comfortable than their reputation suggests.

Common causes: deep decay, cracked tooth, traumatic injury, failed filling

Same-Day Crowns

Broken or cracked teeth often require a crown immediately to prevent further fracture. Using in-office CAD/CAM milling technology, Dr. Turke can design, mill, and seat a permanent porcelain or zirconia crown in a single appointment -- no temporaries, no two-week lab wait. Same-day crowns are a same-day emergency solution.

Common causes: broken tooth, failed old crown, large cavity, post root canal

Same-Day Implant Placement

When a tooth cannot be saved and must be extracted, implant placement at the same appointment (immediate placement) is often possible. This approach preserves the existing bone socket, reduces total treatment time, and avoids a second surgical appointment. Dr. Dawson evaluates bone quality chairside to determine same-day implant eligibility.

Eligible when: sufficient bone present, no active uncontrolled infection, front or premolar tooth

Tooth Extractions

When a tooth is too damaged, infected, or broken to save, extraction is the fastest path to pain relief. Dr. Dawson performs both simple and surgical extractions same-day, including wisdom teeth and broken-root cases. Sedation is available for anxious patients. Replacement options (implant, bridge) are discussed at the same appointment.

Sedation available: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation for anxious patients

Abscess Drainage (Urgent)

Dental abscesses do not resolve on their own and can spread rapidly to the jaw, neck, and airway. We drain abscesses same-day, prescribe appropriate antibiotics, and treat the underlying tooth. Facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing alongside dental pain requires immediate care -- call us before coming in so we can prepare.

If swelling reaches your eye, jaw, or neck -- call 911 immediately.

Chipped & Broken Tooth Repair

Chipped or broken teeth with sharp edges are painful, lacerate soft tissue, and often worsen if left unaddressed. Dental bonding repairs chips and minor breaks in a single visit using tooth-colored composite resin -- no lab, no waiting. For larger breaks or root involvement, a same-day crown may be the better option. We assess and recommend the right solution on arrival.

What to Do Right Now

Tap your situation below. These steps reduce pain, protect the tooth, and improve your outcome on the way in.

Knocked-Out Tooth 30-Min Window
  1. Hold by the crown (white top) -- never touch the root surface
  2. Rinse gently with milk or sterile saline if dirty -- do NOT scrub
  3. Storage priority: back in socket > Save-A-Tooth kit > whole milk > cheek -- NEVER dry or plain water
  4. Come in immediately -- success is highest within 30 minutes and drops sharply after 60
Tooth survival drops sharply after 60 minutes. Call (480) 530-3663 on the way so we are ready when you arrive.
Dental Abscess or Facial Swelling Call First
  1. Apply a cold compress to the cheek in 10-minute on/off intervals
  2. Do NOT attempt to pop or drain the abscess yourself
  3. Do not apply heat -- it accelerates infection spread
  4. If swelling reaches your eye, jaw, or neck -- call 911 immediately
Severe Toothache Same-Day
  1. Rinse the mouth with warm salt water to clear debris around the tooth
  2. Take OTC ibuprofen (if not contraindicated) to reduce inflammation and pain
  3. Do NOT place aspirin directly on the gum -- it causes a chemical burn
  4. Avoid very hot or cold foods on the affected side
Cracked or Chipped Tooth Same-Day
  1. Rinse with warm water to clear any fragments
  2. Apply gauze with gentle pressure if there is bleeding from the gum
  3. Avoid biting on that side -- especially hard or crunchy foods
  4. If there is a large visible break or a sharp edge cutting the cheek, come in the same day
Bleeding / Soft Tissue Injury Same-Day
  1. Apply firm, steady pressure with clean gauze for at least 10 minutes without lifting to check
  2. Lifting the gauze before 10 minutes dislodges the clot and restarts bleeding
  3. If bleeding does not slow after 15 minutes of pressure, come in or go to urgent care
Lost Crown or Filling Same-Day
  1. Locate the crown if possible and bring it with you to the appointment
  2. Apply a small amount of OTC dental cement inside the crown to seat it temporarily
  3. Do not use super glue -- it makes re-cementation significantly harder
  4. Avoid chewing on that side until repaired
Post-Extraction Pain or Dry Socket Same-Day
  1. Worsening pain 2-4 days after an extraction may be dry socket -- a common and treatable complication
  2. Do not smoke, use straws, or rinse vigorously -- these dislodge the clot
  3. Gently rinse with warm salt water and take ibuprofen for pain
  4. Call us -- we can place a medicated dressing that provides fast relief, usually same day

What Happens When You Call About a Dental Emergency

  1. Step 1

Call (480) 530-3663 as early as possible. Tell our team your main symptom -- tooth pain, swelling, knocked-out tooth, or broken tooth. We triage over the phone and assign a same-day slot based on severity. For life-threatening emergencies, call 911 first.

    Call Us First

  2. Prepare and Travel In

    Step 2

We will tell you any first-aid steps to take while you are on the way. For a knocked-out tooth, storage in milk is critical. For sedation appointments, a driver is required. For all others, you can drive yourself.

  3. Step 3

We have a treatment room and the appropriate materials ready for your specific emergency. New patients complete a brief intake form. For anxious patients, we can initiate nitrous oxide or oral sedation before any procedures begin.

    Arrive and Check In

  4. Diagnosis and Written Estimate

    Step 4

Your doctor evaluates the emergency with targeted X-rays and a clinical exam. You receive a clear explanation of what is happening, your treatment options, and a written cost estimate before any treatment begins. No surprises.

  5. Step 5

Most emergency treatment is completed the same day: extractions, root canals, crown placements, recements, soft tissue repair, and abscess drainage. Complex cases may require a follow-up appointment for definitive treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Any situation involving significant pain, trauma, swelling, or a tooth that has been knocked out or broken is an emergency. A useful rule: if it is causing you enough distress to wonder whether you should call, call. We would rather have a quick conversation and reassure you than have you wait on something that needs treatment. Common emergencies include severe toothaches, knocked-out or cracked teeth, lost crowns, dental abscesses, and soft tissue injuries.

For true emergencies, we aim to see you the same day. Call us as early in the morning as possible -- (480) 530-3663 -- and we will work to fit you into an emergency slot. In most cases we can get you in within a few hours. Calling first rather than just walking in gives us time to prepare the right treatment room and materials for your specific situation.

Yes. We welcome new patients for emergency visits. Call us and we will collect basic information over the phone while we prepare your appointment. You do not need a referral or any prior relationship with our practice.

Not always -- mild sensitivity to hot or cold that fades quickly can often wait for a scheduled appointment. However, any pain that is severe, persistent, worsening, or accompanied by swelling, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth is likely an emergency. Dental infections in particular can escalate quickly, so it is always safer to call and let us evaluate rather than wait.

Cost should never prevent you from getting necessary care. We accept most dental insurance plans and will verify your benefits before treatment so there are no surprises. For uninsured patients, we offer flexible financing options including low-interest payment plans. We also have a dental membership plan that covers exams and X-rays for a flat annual fee. Talk to our front desk -- we will find an option that works.

Call (480) 530-3663. Our after-hours message will provide guidance. For true life-threatening emergencies -- uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, or severe jaw trauma -- call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For non-life-threatening emergencies, leave a message and we will call you back at the start of business to schedule a same-day appointment.

Yes, if you act fast. The periodontal ligament cells on the root surface need to stay alive for reimplantation to work. Keep the tooth moist, handle it by the crown only, and get to us within 30 to 60 minutes. Success rates are highest when reimplantation happens in under 30 minutes.
