In-Office vs. Take-Home Whitening

In-Office Whitening

A single appointment of approximately 60 to 90 minutes. A higher-concentration gel is applied by our team and activated under professional conditions, lifting stains several shades in one visit.

Best for: upcoming events, patients who want immediate results, or those who prefer not to manage a take-home routine.

Take-Home Whitening

Custom-fitted trays made from digital impressions of your teeth, paired with professional-grade whitening gel. Worn for 30 to 60 minutes daily over one to two weeks.

Best for: patients who prefer gradual whitening, sensitive teeth that do better with lower concentration, or those who want touch-up capability long-term.

The Whitening Process

  1. 5 min

We photograph and record your baseline shade so you can see the actual change at the end of treatment.

    Shade Assessment

  2. Gum Protection

    5 min

A protective barrier is applied to the gum tissue before gel placement to prevent soft-tissue irritation.

  3. 45--60 min

Whitening gel is applied in cycles (in-office) or loaded into custom trays (take-home). The active ingredient penetrates enamel to break up stain molecules.

    Gel Application

  4. Final Shade Check

    5 min

At the end of in-office treatment, we compare against your baseline. Take-home patients reassess at a follow-up or return when satisfied with their result.

Who Is a Candidate?

Professional whitening is safe for most adults with healthy enamel and gums. The best candidates have natural enamel staining from coffee, tea, red wine, aging, or tobacco use. Results are strongest on extrinsic (surface) stains and more gradual on intrinsic (deep) stains.

Good Candidates

  • Natural teeth with enamel staining
  • Coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco discoloration
  • Age-related yellowing
  • Healthy gums and no untreated decay
  • Sensitive patients (with desensitizing protocol)

Not Ideal For

  • Crowns, veneers, or bonding in the smile zone (restorations do not whiten)
  • Severe intrinsic staining from tetracycline or fluorosis
  • Active gum disease or untreated cavities
  • Severe enamel erosion or exposed dentin
  • Pregnancy or nursing (as a precaution)

If you have sensitivity concerns, we offer a desensitizing treatment before or during whitening to reduce discomfort and let you achieve your goal shade at a comfortable pace.

How Long Do Results Last?

Most patients achieve 4 to 8 shades of improvement depending on the type and depth of their staining. How long those results hold depends on diet, habits, and whether you use touch-up gel.

In-Office Whitening

Results typically last 6 months to 2 years depending on diet and habits.

Annual touch-up with take-home trays extends results significantly.

Take-Home Trays

Results last 1 to 2 years with consistent daily care.

Your custom trays are reusable -- order touch-up gel as needed to maintain your shade.

Whitening and Restorations: What to Know

Whitening agents work only on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, dental bonding, and tooth-colored fillings will not change shade during whitening treatment. If those restorations sit within your visible smile zone, this matters.

The recommended sequence: whiten first, then have your restorations (crowns, veneers, or bonding) matched to your new shade. Placing restorations before whitening means your natural teeth will lighten later while the restorations stay their original color -- creating a visible mismatch.

If you already have restorations and want to whiten, we will discuss realistic expectations and whether replacing or adjusting any restorations makes sense for your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect and typically lasts 24 to 48 hours after treatment. It is caused by fluid movement within the enamel tubules and resolves on its own -- it is not permanent and does not indicate enamel damage. Patients with pre-existing sensitivity can use a desensitizing toothpaste beforehand and choose a lower-concentration formula to reduce discomfort during treatment.

In-office whitening results typically last 6 months to 2 years. Take-home tray results last approximately 1 to 2 years. Both depend heavily on diet and habits -- coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco are the primary culprits for re-staining. Patients with custom trays can use annual touch-up gel to maintain their shade without a full whitening course.

Whitening will only affect your natural teeth -- not existing restorations. If your veneers or crowns are visible in your smile zone, whitening the surrounding natural teeth may create a color mismatch. We will evaluate your specific situation at your consultation and help you decide whether whitening makes sense, and whether any restorations should be updated to match a new shade.

Professional gel contains higher concentrations of hydrogen or carbamide peroxide that are not available over the counter. It is applied with custom-fitted trays or by a clinician in a controlled setting, which reduces gel contact with gum tissue and produces faster, more even results. Over-the-counter strips use low-concentration gel in universal trays that do not seal well -- leading to patchy results and greater gum exposure.

Limit staining beverages (coffee, tea, red wine) in the first 48 hours after treatment when enamel pores are most open. Use a whitening or anti-stain toothpaste for daily maintenance. Rinse with water after consuming dark-colored foods or drinks. If you received custom take-home trays, apply touch-up gel once or twice a year to extend results without another full course of treatment.

Always whiten first. Restorations are shade-matched at the time they are made and will not respond to whitening agents afterward. If you whiten before restorations are placed, your dentist can select a porcelain or composite shade that matches your new, brighter baseline. Whitening after placement means your natural teeth lighten but the restorations stay put -- creating a visible color difference.
